Agent Body: The Swarm Control Plane & Process Supervisor
Running eleven decoupled autonomous microservices on a single developer machine or remote build node creates a massive operational challenge. If each daemon requires its own terminal tab, manually managed PID files, and complex environment configuration, the developer experience rapidly degrades.
agent-body is the master control plane and process supervisor for the Autonomic AI cluster. Built in high-performance Rust, it provides the unified autonomic meta-CLI, governs the shared ~/.autonomic/ filesystem tree, manages macOS launchd LaunchAgents, and boots the entire ecosystem in strict topological dependency order.
The Monolithic vs Micro-Organ Paradigm
Traditional agent frameworks (LangChain, AutoGen, CrewAI) execute all tools, memory layers, and subprocesses within a single monolithic runtime process. When an agent tool encounters a segmentation fault, triggers an unhandled panic, or leaks memory during a multi-gigabyte build, the entire agent session crashes—obliterating in-flight context and abandoning orphan child processes.
agent-body inverts this model:
- Isolated Binary Daemons: Every organ (
agent-brain,agent-spine,agent-muscle,agent-immune, etc.) runs as an independent, sandboxed operating system process. - Topological Boot Pipeline: Daemons are started in strict mathematical sequence based on dependency DAGs:
- Step 1: Embedded NATS JetStream message broker on port
4222. - Step 2:
agent-nervesservice mesh connects and creates the durableAUTONOMICstream. - Step 3:
agent-braininitializes the temporal SQLite database and HNSW vector index at~/.autonomic/memory/serve.sock. - Step 4:
agent-spineboots the YAML workflow DAG orchestrator. - Step 5: Concurrent worker daemons (
agent-muscle,agent-immune,agent-mouth,agent-heart,agent-eyes) register with the supervisor.
- Step 1: Embedded NATS JetStream message broker on port
- Sub-Millisecond Health Probing:
agent-bodycontinuously pings each daemon’s Unix socket or HTTP/healthendpoint, collecting memory RSS and CPU utilization.
Native macOS launchd Integration
On macOS, developers expect services to start silently upon system login, survive sleep/wake cycles, and gracefully restart if killed:
# Register and start the cluster under launchd supervision
autonomic start --daemon
# Inspect the registered LaunchAgent
cat ~/Library/LaunchAgents/dev.autonomic.agent-body.plist When started as a daemon, agent-body handles OS signals (SIGTERM, SIGHUP) deterministically. It signals active DAGs to snapshot their state, drains NATS subscriber queues, and terminates worker processes cleanly without orphan locks.
Dynamic Catalog Discovery (get_autonomic_catalog)
To allow external LLM hosts (Cursor IDE, Claude Desktop, Antigravity) to discover active ecosystem capabilities without having to memorize port numbers, agent-body exposes the get_autonomic_catalog MCP tool:
{
"name": "get_autonomic_catalog",
"arguments": {
"filter_tier": "all"
}
} Catalog Response:
{
"cluster_id": "darwin-arm64-local",
"version": "v1.0.0-beta.2",
"organs": [
{
"name": "agent-brain",
"tier": "core",
"status": "HEALTHY",
"pid": 48210,
"memory_rss_mb": 42.6,
"socket": "~/.autonomic/memory/serve.sock",

},
{
"name": "agent-spine",

"memory_rss_mb": 28.1,

}
]
} Command Line Workflows
The autonomic meta-CLI provides developers with a unified entrypoint:
# 1. Run environment diagnostics and port verification
autonomic doctor
# 2. Boot all 11 daemons
autonomic start
# 3. View live health and memory consumption matrix
autonomic status
# 4. Multiplex logs across all organs with colorized prefixes
autonomic logs -f --organ brain,spine By isolating process lifecycles behind agent-body, the Autonomic ecosystem achieves carrier-grade resilience: an individual daemon crash is treated as a routine self-healing event rather than a fatal session failure.
